You see, before said break I found myself persistently glued to my iPhone screen; perpetually checking for notifications. And even if there were none, I'd have an incessant yearning to open up the app and check for new posts. I became obsessed with figures, to the point where it essentially began to dominate my days. Everything became systematic and the inspiration and enjoyment I once associated with Instagram became overwhelming and upsetting. Especially with FOMO continuously causing great anxiety.
I realised how unhealthy this infatuation had become and decided to allow myself some breathing room; not just from posting but from perusing also. And it was one of the best things I could have done for myself because in stepping away I managed to gain some much needed clarity. I realised just how much this had no longer become an enjoyable process. From attaining ridiculous "follower" goals to creating a meticulous display in certain hues. The need and extreme pressure I placed on myself to perform, gain and create an impeccable feed was absurd.
In having returned I noticed that I wasn't alone with my absence. There were a handful of 'grammers who also felt constricted and needed a time-out. I truly adore the fact that I am no longer compelled to check my phone every few minutes (my battery life has also extended significantly) and because of this Instagram is becoming amusing once again. And while I may have returned to social media my presence remains inconspicuous. Something which once would have distraught me terribly, now phases me not. I'm still getting used to the annoying categorising in ones feed and the new Snapchat-esque "Stories" feature. Though I can't say I am a huge fan of the latter.
By nature I am a perfectionist, so the need to curate a visually vibrant and immaculate display remains; albeit sans the extreme pressures. And while posting may be sporadic, feel free to check me out over on @soniademacedo

I was the same way-- constantly checking Instagram, worrying about how my feed looked. I didn't make a conscious decision like you to take a break. Honestly I think it was instigated by the change in the instagram algorithm. I hate how they don't come in chronological order anymore >:(
ReplyDeleteMili | Sharmtoaster
Me too. Everything is jumbled and doesn't make much sense. I keep coming across posts from a certain individual that jumps days and hours and it's so infuriating xx
DeleteI just came from my insta post to yours and it makes so much more sense. I agree, the whole process of creating content that's perfect for instagram can get quite stressful. I've been working hard on my content but only a couple of pictures out of all that I click actually go up on my feed which is how it works. I've stopped checking it as often too because of the battery lol. I only check two to three times a day which is way improved as compared to spending hours on it. Totally guilty of that. I'm glad you're back now and I think quality over quantity is always going to be a thing on insta. It's good as long as it stays enjoyable xx
ReplyDeletewww.wildfirecharm.com
Definitely. Quality over quantity is paramount for me, and also much less a blessing then curse as the perfectionist in me ends up culling all options lol xx
DeleteI feel exactly the same - I've just had what feels like a month away from blogging/twitter because it was all getting too much and I was becoming absorbed with it all. It's healthy to take breaks away from social media and I honestly believe it does SO much for your mental (and often physical) well being. Lovely post.

I can totally relate with what you wrote. I never actually too a break from instagram, but now I decided I would only publish and just check it once in a while. I don't go through my feed every single day like I usually did (several times a day). Now I sometimes even forget to check my feed and I only do it once in a week or so.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great plan to me xx
DeleteI think a lot of people will be able to relate to this myself included. Sounds like the break really did good for you.

It did a world of good indeed xx
DeleteI know what you mean, sometimes I think that I also need a break from blog and social medias.
ReplyDeleteCute pictures!:)

Sonia, i related so much with what you have written. The thing is, sometimes i feel overhelmed with the need of constantly update instagram, creat appealing content and check likes and followings.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to be more easy going, but i kind of feel like addicted to it.
I'm glad you were able to take a step back and view things in perspective. I wish i could do the same instead of keeping glued to my iphone screen.
Have a wonderful wednesday, dear.

Baby steps Catrine. It took me a while to ween myself away from it! And I'm glad I did though, it was just becoming too much xx
DeleteVery interesting. I had a similar experience to FB and quit it for 4 years. I only have one now bc of the blog. I can get Insta-obsessed sometimes, I admit.
ReplyDeleteAhhh FB. I don't check that as often anymore. People don't post like they used to, which is a good thing lol xx
DeleteReally nice post!

welcome back! just followed you on Instagram :) I get you though.. I just can't glue myself to the iPhone screen for the sake of one app haha..

DeleteSocial media in general can be overwhelming so a little break now and then is probably a good thing especially when it really starts getting to you. I try to allot time for social media because I just know it would annoy me if I had to spend more time on it. Probably an odd thing for a blogger to say ;p Congrats on your upcoming five year blog anniversary! Im so happy to hear that you're still enjoying K-dramas. i think they're a good obsession to have ^_^
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not an odd thing but rather smart than anything else. Ive tried to schedule and set reminders for myself but I still manage to be repelled lol. And yes to the K-Dramas. I think that'll be a lifelong thing from now xx
DeleteI only have mine for two reasons: because of my blog and to keep up with makeup releases! HaHaHa I probably put the least amount of time into caring what my pictures look like. Oh Sonia! HAVE FUN! Your pictures are fab and your page is absolutely delightful. Forget about the numbers! Post pictures that you're proud of and people will be proud of them also.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.averysweetblog.com/
Yes have fun! I need to be constantly reminded of this! xx
DeleteGreat post! The pressures of feeling the need to have a "perfect" Instagram can definitely be overwhelming.

Your right, sometimes people worry about a post or try to make it perfect to fit a look. Honestly, you have a great feed and I love your site. You should do what you love and have it come natural. Anytime you feel stress you did the right thing by stepping away from it for a bit :) http://www.bauchlefashion.com/2016/10/hot-bucket-in-city.html
ReplyDeleteAww thank you gorgeous. I'll take this all on board and be sure to do so. I don't think I'll need reminding though hehehehe xx
DeleteGreat to hear that you're rediscovering the thrill of Instagram again! It's really a great platform for people to share things, but it can definitely become too much. Something that should be fun shouldn't cause so much stress. I don't really follow the whole themes thing or feed aesthetic, I just do what I think looks nice and that I'm happy with. It's definitely way more freeing to not feel like we have to follow those "rules". By the way, your photos are really nice!

I'm trying to forget the whole theme for your feed thing because I can't seem to find a balance and finding that I prefer to have something vibrant, which is what I continually produce regardless so I might as well go with it xx

I can completely relate to your sentiments. I find myself obsessing over my blog & related activities. Like anything, it's all about moderation. Thankfully, I've enlisted the help of my boyfriend to take some of the pressure off of me. :]

Ahhh good ole BF xx
DeleteYou do take beautiful instagram pics! :)
ReplyDeleteI was finding I was spending far too much time on my phone and on instagram too - a tech detox helped me put it in perspective and now I use it less. The stupid feed no longer being in chronological order helps too, ha! I get frustrated with it after a while - i follow a few people that post multiple times a day and when you get the posts all disjointed and out of order it doesn't make sense and just annoys me, ha!
Hope you're having a good week :)
Away From The Blue Blog
Awww thanks Mica. You're the sweetest. The chronological order thing is infuriating. Everything is too confusing and jumbled. xx
DeleteI'm so glad you've managed to find your enjoyment in Instagram again - will have to go check out your feed! I agree that it can become an obsession if we're not careful to take a step back every now and then. I agree about Instagram Stories - it's so similar to Snapchat that I just don't see the point. x
ReplyDeleteKate Louise Blogs / Lingerie Giveaway
Instagram stories is just taking away from snapchat with me now. It's almost impossible to multitask between the two and I've noticed a big drop in people posting (mainly for the reason listed above) which is such a shame. xx
DeleteI never really got into the whole insta game :D Or social media, to be exact... I'm struggling with my schedule and everything, but I hope I'll figure out everything soon.. I have to ask... Is that a Shake Shack burger? These fries reminded me of that and I saw 'Sh' on the bag... If it is... Best. Fries. Ever.! :D Love this xx
ReplyDeleteBeautyPepTalk
Yes! That's Shake Shack alright. Oh so good indeed xx

ReplyDeletewww.aimeroseblog.com
I totally get what you mean! I had to take a break from Instagram a looong time ago. I found that unfollowing people that didn't add any value to my life was also good for me. I would just follow people I envied or wanted to be like. I don't take Instagram too seriously now. I do look at my numbers and try my hardest to use the platform and grow my following, but I've definitely been a lot less obsessive. I wish more people would talk about stuff like this! So thank you so much for sharing. :)

DeleteSocial media can be very addictive. I spend a lot of time on Instagram, but mostly stalking lol. I try to only follow fitness people and a few others inspiring people aside from my friends.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you not stressing yourself too much with it now. :)

Sauniya | Find Your Bliss ♡
Your photos are beautiful. Social media can be addictive.
ReplyDeleteI chose not to have an Instagram account due to their Facebook-style
of unaccountable high-handed, gender-discriminatory censorship.
You may have read about when Chelsea Handler got censored by Instagram,
or how they censored photos of a cake because their algorithm mistook the icing for breasts.
It reminded me of how Facebook censored an ACLU post on censorship
because it had a photo of a nude statue in it.
Also, Instagram photos don't show up on my Twitter feed.
Reading about your travails and phone-checking,
I'm glad I didn't join and get addicted to Instagram.
I think I'll wait for more of a no-strings no censorship photo site,
preferably one that works without javascript and allows easy sharing -
and until I get better at taking photos.
I do love yours

Well when it's a part of your job and source of income it's hard not to find yourself in that position! So don't be so hard on yourself xx
DeleteOh gosh! I feel you! I have been known to spend hours editing/choosing just one insta pic and am constantly on my phone! I feel like a break every now and then is super important, although it can be really difficult when your insta/blog is your source of income! I have slowly become a little less obsessed and learnt to enjoy insta again too!

ReplyDeleteAww I love your little yorky, and I had the same problem, I took a month off blogging (and all social media such as ig etc.) came back to hundreds of comments and messages when will I post again, when I eventually did post again my readers were very horrible that Ive left for so long looool I received so many mean emails how I'm not serious etc. :-D I really needed a breaaaak!
