NOW PLAYING: Clair de lune - Flight Facilities
Guys, let me begin this post with another round of gratitude for all those lovely birthday well wishes and sweet nothings. You sure know how to make a girl smile, especially when she's not feeling the best. That said I am feeling a tad better; yesterdays epic (and seriously nail biting) Superbowl game has me in much livelier spirits. Patriots baby, whooo! As I've gotten older the need for arm parties and the extreme collecting and hoarding of high street trend items has become more and more unnecessary for me. And with that a new love and appreciation for simple basics has blossomed. As individual pieces, like a chameleon they have the ability to transform and harmonise. The the ultimate team players.
When it comes to basics I tend to agree with the image above and for me there are certain key pieces that I believe one must procure. A well-fitted pair of denims, a simple tee and a tough biker jacket (I know some may not consider a biker as "basic" but I do and I am referring to the general structure of said jacket here). For me, these are three pieces I would cease to exist without. And I'm not being melodramatic. Because they're especially perfect for those mornings were you find yourself crawling out of the comforts of bed, tearing through your wardrobe like some feral supernatural being, causing havoc and chaos all in the hopes of finding something decent to wear. In having these three pieces at hand you'll save yourself from unnecessary drama and avoid moments like these. By placing all three together you have one drool worthy ensemble at your command.
What do you guys think? Do you agree? Have any of you noticed a new found respect or gravitation towards the humble basics with age?

I completely agree! Good basics are the foundation of any closet. We get so caught up in all the options that we forget that. I'm with you on the well fitted denim and am looking for both a good pair of boyfriend jeans and great skinnies too!

I've always been a girl whose wardrobe has revolved around basics. I could never convince myself that I could pull of trends and have always stuck with the tried and true. Luckily, with age, those pieces have been getting better and better in quality. I'd have to add though, a solid pair of boots is always killer
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more! xx
DeleteI agree with that! Thanks for sharing!

I'm building up my wardrobe with basics too. Makes so much more sense than blindly following trends
ReplyDeleteIt only takes a few pieces to make a wardrobe pop and you could build from it a good blazer, knit sweater ,t-shirt of crew necks and v-necks and a crisp white shirt with a long skirt, slack and jean trust me when I left home I had this to play with and build so many outfit from it by adding scarfs, belt and cool accessories.
ReplyDeleteThe basics is what its all about. I think people overdo fashion so much these days thinking that it's a statement but really, when you pass someone in the street pulling off just a plain white tee and some boyfriend jeans.. it's nice :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a fabulous birthday! I was celebrating for you over here in London!

It is a fine art to style a humble tee and jean and to carry it with such poise. Thank you for the birthday love sweetie! xx
DeleteOhh I couldn't agree more! I'm so saving that list for future reference!

ReplyDeleteI have found comfort in the basics as I age, sure. You sorta learn what feels right + good with your style, and have stand-bys that never let you down.

DeleteOne thing I've noticed is that just plain pumps to slip on my feet are so needed lately! Heels and pretty sandals are lovely but lately so many of my new dresses don't match any shoes I have besides a nice pair of plain black pumps!
ReplyDeleteWoolworths has great shoes too, leather and so comfortable.

My dear Sonia,
ReplyDeleteI have to say you make the best collage that a gal can find. Love love the combo put together. Gosh! I have not mastered the art of putting a proper bold lip like hers on the go, seriously. The other day I was almost late for an event, my hubby drove like an F1 driver (just to get me there on time *_^), and it was not a pleasing sight, haha! I need sturdy hands, please!!
Well, I have to agree with you on this, the three basics here is most definitely a winning combo and truly can be a life savour at times like you mentioned above. I am quite a jacket and blazer sort of a person. Have not gotten my hands on a real cool nice biker jacket, just yet.
My hunt continues.
Yes, as we age, some things seemed way important back then appears less relevant now, if one puts things into better perspective (high-five-ing you there!)
Thanks for dropping over and say hi. Always heartwarming to see familiar "faces" and "voices" there, back again!
Have a beautiful rest of the week, my friend.
Cheers,
Jeann
Aww thanks lovely. I haven't mastered it either, it takes me a good while to put mine on properly. I hope you find that fierce biker jacket girl! xx
DeleteOh, happy happy belated birthday, Sonia! Am sure it was a blast *_^
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeann xx
DeleteI should definitely apply these rules!;) My closet is begging for mercy! ;) Thanks Sonia!

Hello Sonia,
ReplyDeleteFirst up, HAPPY 26th birthday to you! I will try to wish you happy 26th every year from now on. Ah, now I know your age and I'm much older than you. Maybe I should remain 26 every year too. Hehe... Well, I hope you spent some quiet birthday moments with yourself coz that's the best company ever and also with selected loved ones. For someone living along the equator, I've always heard about Superbowl and thought it was the super championship for bowling. No, you didn't hear that. I'm so ashamed to admit that. Of coz when I got into the habit of googling, I would try not to embarrass myself by googling first.
RYC:
Ooh... I have half a day's time difference with people way up in the north too so we are actually closer in time zone. You and me, Sonia. I try not to follow too many people as I do not like my news feed to be too cluttered. There are really too many famous YouTubers, beauty bloggers, fashion bloggers to follow, so I pick and choose and if I wanna check out the post of the rest, they are easily searchable. I still miss out on many posts even with control of who I'm following. I guess the only way not to miss out is to be trawling it every hour.
The fat thing seems to be true on me. I've mostly sleeveless dresses for work and I find that other than my legs my arms getting flabbier and flabbier in the cold office. I have a blazer but sometimes, it gets too warm. Maybe I should start to wear longer sleeves but Singapore is just too hot.

Great thoughts, Sonia! Btw, did I miss your birthday? Oh dear! Happy belated birthday, in case I didn't wish you before. xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh that old thing, yes it was back at the end of January lol. Thank you xx
DeleteMorning Sonia! Definitely I agree with you! Growing up, I found myself fonder of basics and comfy style. Those items are a must-have even for me and actually my kind of "uniform" :) Hope you had a great bday and blast! Many kisses Sonia! xo
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you!! Sometimes, basics are just more than enough. And you know what? Sometimes, the best way to feel confident is to actually put on some basics. (at least they make me comfortable :p). And loveee your arm candy that you’ve put together! Hope you had a blasting birthday, babe! <3
ReplyDeletehttp://anshul90.com
Me too and thanks for the birthday wishes xx
DeleteHappy to hear you feel better now! Hope your b-day was nice! I agree about these 3 items, although I think the biker jacket is not a basic item. But I really want to find my perfect one. Have a nice day!
ReplyDeletesunandsany
Oh I agree basics are the best wardrobe pieces! :) I'm finding myself wanting more and more basic pieces and passing on the more statement stand-alone pieces. It just makes getting dressed easier if everything goes together! :)
ReplyDeleteWill never give up my arm parties though! Longing to get back into them, once baby T gets a little less destructive with his grabbing! ha!

DeleteI used to accumulate clothes, spending lots of money on a monthly basis. Nowadays it's the opposite! Shopping is no longer a hobby of mine. I stick to what I've got and it's more than enough.

I did that too when I was younger, though shopping is still a favorite pastime of mine hehehe! xx

DeleteHave a happy belated birthday Sonia!! Hoping for the best for your birthday week and that you get everything that you want and more! Oh my, do I love everything in this post. The hair is amazing and I don't understand why my hair can never look like that whenever I style it. The beautiful jewelry (I need some jewelry in my life) and the pretty flowers just makes a perfect collage. I consider a biker jacket a staple for sure! If only I can afford a nice Acne one, I think my wardrobe would be complete but until then, my H&M one will have to do!
ReplyDeleteAwww thank you Kat and I'm glad I am not the only one who thinks a cool biker is essential. I've been (trying) to save for a fierce BLK DNM one for ages now xx
Deleteyour collage is gorgeous love your blog following you.

ReplyDeleteI'm in the long process of re-doing my wardrobe and I agree basics are a must. T-Shirts of any flattering kind and a lot of denim I tend to drift towards for bottoms. Jeans, shorts (always), and I'm looking for the perfect denim mini skirt :) And yes, a biker jacket is a staple. Simply because it makes you feel badass when you wear it ;) haha.

ReplyDeleteI've also been veering towards the basics as time goes on. I'm not sure if it has to do with age, or because I've been trends like normcore. Either way, I'm embracing it :)
ReplyDeleteMili
It is true that with age, we are returning to basics... and wearing more comfy clothes... like pyjamas comfy :) Love your list. Have a great day. Mel

Heck yeah, I do. For example, I am currently wearing a grey sweatshirt, jeans, prairie boots and lovely gold jewelry. I realize this is not the sexiest of outfits, but I feel comfortable and I like how it looks. Sometime the lack of fuss is the beauty in an outfit.

I'm glad you're feeling better now, Sonia! I totally agree with you, there's nothing wrong the simple basic. I usually stay away from basics because I feel that they're too plain, but I realize that it's always about the perception and how you utilise them. I want that French wardrobe! :)

Glad to know that you're starting to feel better. I love to "stock" my closet with tons and tons of basic pieces because: 1) they never go out of style 2) they never go out of style 3) it's easy to mix and match them with almost anything.

DeleteI'm entirely with you. I love the simplicity of a basic tee, but the British weather can make it more than a little difficult to wear on its own! I'm all for the biker jacket, so long as it isn't adorned with one million studs and colour splats, I discovered the beauty of a simple leather jacket back in October and have been attached to it ever since!
