They say there are certain things one must venture to at least once during the long and somewhat arduous drive to Las Vegas from LA. One of those includes a stop at Peggy Sue's Diner. Truth be told, you can't actually miss this diner because there are numerous vibrantly hued billboards sprinkled along the sides of the freeway. The retro typography and lure of 1950's whimsy daring you to take the exit and proceed towards a large pink building, ever so contrasting against the rust like tones of the surrounding mountainscape and desert sands.
The experience itself is more out of novel fancifulness than for sumptuous cuisine. And while my travel companion may digress, personally I found the food to be lacking. Edible yes, but not something that leaves you salivating for more. And I think this is general understanding for most. You don't come here for award winning burgers and fries, you come here for uniqueness and oddity. You come here to peruse the laminated menus and chuckle over burgers named after Hollywood icons. For the 1950's diner "feels", of worn out booths and pink walls decked in forgotten memorabilia. For the hospitality of waitresses dressed in muted green uniforms with pink frilled aprons and white tennis shoes. And for the free sticks of old fashioned gum you receive upon payment of your bill (you actually need to collect it at their gift store, but still, novel nonetheless).

I love this place it's perfect for a vintage themed photoshoot. I've never seen it on my way to Vegas, I wonder what freeway it's off of. I would love to visit this diner, it has such an authentic feel to it.

And yet, I've never ever been here before! I know it's popular but I haven't had the appetite to stop by every time I pass it! Love that you got to try this place out though, and as always... I love your photos!
ReplyDeleteWell I wouldn't go there on an empty stomach because I feel like you'd leave unsatisfied. Full? Definitely. They load those fries and sides like the world is going to end! But the experience of it all is enough for a quick stop over! xx
Deletelove the classic diner feel!!! always great comfort food, i assume :D

ReplyDeleteIf you ever find yourself that way you should totally stop by Lilli. So nostalgic and fun. There's even more to see on the outside. We didn't get to see it because it was getting dark and needed to hit the road! xx

This diner looks like something straight out of a movie. It's a shame that the food was lacking but at least the diner itself had a really cool atmosphere.

DeleteInteresting place)
ReplyDeleteI explain the food lacking with the fact that they accent more on the appearance of it and the place itself. Thanks for your honest opinion, S! It's interesting to see your adventures in the US.
ReplyDeleteSun and Sany - Bulgarian Travel and Leisure Blog
Oh for sure S. I think they state that the menu is also authentically 1950's which could also explain why it's a little bland xx
DeleteThis is too cool! Love the atmosphere.

These are fab pictures and I've got such wanderlust now, though its such a shame you say the food was lacking as that burger had my mouth watering! x

ReplyDeleteYes Gigi! We definitely have to meet up! xx
DeleteI had lunch there on Tuesday! I agree with you, the food didn't knock me off my feet. The interior is interesting though and I'm glad I went there instead of a generic Burger King or McD. I didn't get the gum in the end because I didn't fully understand what the checkout lady was saying. I understood that there was something for free but I didn't bother checking out their store.
ReplyDeleteluxessed
Definitely a place for the novelty not the food. And at least you can say that you've been there too. Re the gum, from memory when we paid our bill the lady who served us ended up repeating the instructions to us! And I think I read somewhere about the gum too so I was all over it. The gum is more novelty too, it loses flavour within seconds hehehe xx
DeleteThat looks so cool! Now I can't wait for my US trip in summer :D
ReplyDeletexx
I've been to quite a few places like this, where the food hans't been overwhelmingly impressive, but the decor most definitely worth seeing for the novelty!

I really want to drive one day from Los Angeles to Las Vegas; the road must be so fun and full of places like Peggy Sue's Diner :) For some reason, I am not surprised to hear that the food isn't as good as the ambiance of this place. Thank you for sharing these pictures and your experience :)

I don't know if you'd call it fun! I guess depending on the company but this stop is definitely one you should make along the way! xx

How cool to enter a diner and just be transported 60 years back in time! I remember there used to be a diner in Melbourne with a similar concept but I think they may have closed down now. To be honest, 50s diners remind me of the Back to the Future films which I love so much!

Hahaha you're the first person to actually note how unappealing the burger actually is. I suppose it was authentically 50's though xx
