I hate to admit it but my blogging game has been slightly off lately. Either time is not Team Sonia or inspiration is lacking. Seemingly I'd like to point the finger at that nasty foe called time but I think I need to cut the crap and finally take responsibility for my own lethargy; self-imposed or not. So I've been pondering ways in which one may increase their motivational levels and get those damn creative juices flowing. Surprisingly it was pretty effortless to come up with some stimulating pointers thanks to caseapp.com who generously allowed me to create my very own custom laptop skin for my MacBook Pro. Here are a few suggestions to get you producing again, should you need it.
MOOD BOARDS
Either digitally through sites like Pinterest which handily allow you to curate several boards while providing a vast range of imagery to peruse (as well as tools to pin outside the site). Or even by physically arranging and placing inspirational pictures, quotes, fabrics or prints on a wall. These can constantly change at your whim which can actually do wonders for the imagination. It can also assist in centring oneself, if you're like me and find yourself drawn to various contrasting themes and styles.
SOCIAL MEDIA
This is a controversial point for me, as mentioned here and here previously. While social media has the ability to cause serious FOMO, with a clear head it can also be quite exhilarating too. There is such diversity when it comes to creativity through social media, both through pictures and words. A quick flick through can help stir new ideas or help define ideas that may not have translated well in the physical as it had in your mind (don't you hate when that happens?)
MUSIC
Crank up your favorite tunes and start creating. Music does wonders for the soul, especially when you're feeling blue so why not utilise it when inspiration is waning? Personally my preference for music styles tends to differ depending on what I'm focused on. Anything that involves the use of imagery like photography I sway more for my usual alternative playlists. When writing, which requires slightly more concentration from me, I have more classical sounds at hand. Debussy is a favotire as is a particular movie score (which I'm too embarrassed to share right now).
BREAKS
In writing when people speak of that cursed writers block, they say the solution to overcoming it is to simply power through. Write, write, write and inspiration is sure to strike. Personally I've found taking a breather is far more advantageous for me. When I force myself to power through something I find I end up waffling on. The same can be said for any task really. If you find yourself struggling taking a slight breather could do wonders. Even just stepping out for some fresh air or grabbing yourself a coffee. In occupying your mind and taking it away from that arduous task it almost resets your brain, so when you come back to it, you see it with fresh new eyes.
ORGANISE
Clean up and organise your desk and workspace! Because a cluttered environment does not inspiration make. Chaos in your space can have the opposite effect. It almost repels you whilst boldly daring you to a duel. And in most cases you just end up backing away, tail between your legs. Take a moment (or an entire morning) to tidy up your space, don't leave it for a day longer because you'll find yourself in a vicious cycle and it will never get done. Same goes for organising yourself really. Get a daily planner or better yet, make use of the calendar on your computer/laptop and start outlining your day, week or month. I am guilty of not utilising my own diary, however I've discovered a new preference for my MacBook's calendar. It's infinitely easier plus you can colour coordinate too. It's made a once burdensome task enjoyable.
PULCHRITUDE
Drawing in from the previous point, and again this is to personal taste but aside from organising your space I think it's vital to surround yourself with dainty things. Things that make you smile like a photo of a loved one or in my case fur baby. Or something that makes you want to Instagram it from every fabulous angle. Decorative piece like a marble tray or artsy paperweight, an engaging print or framed quote, even your favorite watch to name a few. But if cute is not your game then perhaps a potted cactus or have a stack of magazines or coffee table books at hand, which happens to be a perfect distraction when you find yourself straddling those feelings of indifference. For me I insist on having fresh flowers in near proximity.
And now I can include my laptop as a source of inspiration thanks to caseapp.com and my chic new skin. Truthfully I was thrilled when they contacted me about designing a little something special for my trusty MacBook Pro. I knew immediately what I was after too; white marble. Yes, predictable much Sonia. I found the entire process of creating overly effortless. You can BYO image or you can browse through their own design selections. And the lovely people from caseapp.com have a little treat for you guys, get 20% off your purchase with code: COCO20. Valid through to the 14th December 2015.

Hey Sonia!
ReplyDeleteI want one! I used to have case for my macbook, but it was too thick/bulky & kept breaking in parts so I just did away with it. I think I might like a skin better, just something simple to give it a little flair. It's basically like a giant sticker, right?
As for the writer's block - I feel you. Sometimes just forcing myself to write helps, and sometimes a break works better. It just depends. Do you still feel like you're off your blogging game, or has it gotten better?

Happy Holiday Season!
I've had two of those in the past. The first one cracked so I brought another but they are so damn bulky and annoying. I ended up ditching it soon after. Skins are so much easier and yeah, they are like a giant sticker (but better quality in terms of actually sticking fast) Re my blogging game, I'm not sure. I do have my posts planned for the week and I have attempted to plan out the rest of the month so we'll see. Hopefully the quality of writing has improved at least xx
DeleteGreat tips for inspiration, Instagram and Pinterest are my fave for that! Love your choice, caseapp is a great brand.

I've been slightly off on my blogging game too, but I'll pin that on the untimely collapse of my internet connection -- right when I felt the most motivated to post because of the jolly season up ahead. I'm hoping to get that resolved soon though as I leech of my workplace's internet connection in the mean time.
ReplyDeleteI love getting organized and taking a breather when the situation calls for it; powering through work to no avail only stresses me out more and hinders my work progress. Wonderful tips, Sonia!
May | THE MAYDEN
Oh no, I hate when that happens. I'm usually disconnected when inspiration strikes! I do hope all is finally well by now though May xx
DeleteGreat post, Sonia! I agree that workspace is very important especially if we're sitting there & blogging everyday. I decorated my workspace with all my Hello Kitty to keep me relax. Hahaha! xoxo

These are wonderful tips, Sonia. I wholeheartedly agree about music being a source of inspo, and also taking a breather. I don't believe in forcing myself to do something I don't like at the moment, so taking a break works for me:)

We all get a bit lazy sometimes, it's hard to always feel inspired. In those times I usually give myself a break to recharge, and after that the ideas start coming to me. Music, taking a walk, and favourite magazines/websites are usually helpful too :)

I think we all go through creative ruts form time to time. It's only natural. Music and breaks usually help me to get going again. Something about getting lost in a song can just be quite inspiring :)
ReplyDeleteI always get lazy with pinterest, but i should really start using it again for inspiration! thanks for the helpful post!
ReplyDeletewww.samanthamariko.com
Oh yes this whole thing requires A LOT of time and A LOT of motivation. Maintaing a blog itself is uber time consuming but then having to do all the social media on top of it and there are so many to keep up with. You have to pick your battles and your apps!
ReplyDeleteAllie of

It really is a lot of work, but it is rewarding too. Staying motivated can be problematic xx
DeleteInspiring tips, Sonia, thank YOU!
ReplyDeleteI checked out cassapp.com it reminds me of pic monkey, lol...I'm actually recycling an old iPhone case by covering it with polymer clay. I can't tell you how many times I've changed the design, lol...Perhaps, I will settle on one before the new year! (oh no, maybe I should include 2016 in the design, lol:)
Music does it for me most times but to be perfectly honest, so does a nice glass of wine, or two:) I can definitely understand why some classic writers turned to liquor for foggy inspiration. I also keep a notebook by the side of my bed. I find my creativity seems to awaken just when my body wants to sleep!!!
Thanks for sharing, Sonia...
Oh Louise so nice to see you here! Hope all is well with you. I get awfully tired of my phone cases, too quickly sometimes. I've never thought about doing a little DIY to refresh them. Sadly though cases do not last very long in my possession! xx
DeleteI do love that custom laptop skin that you have. I'll surely try them out. Art, Music and a glass of wine does the trick for me for inspiration.

Frankly, I take a week long break whenever I feel burnt out or lack of motivation. Music is definitely a huge inspiration to me, I too like to crank it up whenever I'm in a down mood. xx
ReplyDeleteReflection of Sanity | Palmer's Cocoa Butter Care Package Giveaway (Canada ONLY)
I totally share your view of a breather being more advantageous than write write write. Unless you care more about the quantity than the quality then of course write away. Music and stepping away are two ways that I reset and recharge. I see things in a whole new dimension and my motivation peaks afterwards. I suck at being organized and tend to wing things quite often. I've got to hop on that Macbook calendar but I must find it first, haha. Technology is not my friend. Color coding too? I must jump in right away, need that in my life like yesterday. Hopefully that's an option on mine too. Great tips babe. Enjoy your weekend.
ReplyDeletehttp://fashionablyidu.blogspot.com/
I am a stickler for quality when it comes to my writing which is why pushing through is never a good idea for me. Stepping away does make you see things in a different perspective. But yes, you should totally look into your computers calendar. It's relatively simple and colour coordinating is just the icing on the cake for me xx
DeleteI agree especially on "pulchritude". I don't think this terms exists in Italian, although it comes from Latin. How charming! Much love dear Sonia!! Whenever you like.. You are welcome to add your fashion and beauty links on my blog!

I love that word, it's so lovely which is why I had to use it Coco and thanks for the link up love. I'll be sure to do so xx
DeleteGood advice! What I do when I run out of inspiration, I mentally go back to the time when I decided to start my blog and what vision I had at that time. And soon after I find new ideas. I think that over time we overthink the blogging process, instead of just being in the more spontaneous mood with which we had started off.

That is a great idea Anouk, I'll remember that one when I'm struggling xx
